It's unseasonably warm here on the south coast of Iceland, and it feels like spring although experience tells me it's far to early for that.

I'm not knitting very much these days, but I'm embroidering on the grey hat and that is going very well. I'll soon have something to show you on that front.

The BJS is sew up and ready for the blocking. Today I'm going to choose the colours for the grey hat (the embroidery floss, that is) and hopefully start embroidering it. I'm not quite ready no knit another long cardigan just yet.

BSJ

The Baby Surprise Jacket is almost finished - I just have to hide a few ends and do the shoulder seams. I knit mine with single plötulopi on 4mm (US 6) pins.

The plötulopi works very well for this jacket, it's feather light and soft - but I haven't measured the jacket yet so I'm not sure what size it is. I would guess 6 months to 1 year - or a bit bigger.

It's been to long since I have embroidered anything, so this hat is going to be my next project in that department.

I haven't quite decided what I will do with it - but I know how I want to start and that will do for now.

Washing leather

Some time ago a relative gave me this leather skirt. It was rather frumpy, very full and with unflattering side pockets and really long. And it smelled a bit from being unused for decades.

But the leather was soft and good quality so I decided to alter it. But first I had to get rid of the lingering odour. I tried airing it, both outside and inside for weeks, but that had little effect. I washed the lining and that diminished the smell somewhat, but not nearly enough.

When you live in the country, you can't just run to the dry cleaner, and specialist leather cleaning is really expensive in the capital. So I washed it.

I can hear you gasping now - washing leather, that is surely verboten right?!

Well, it worked, that is all I can say. I hand washed the whole heavy thing and drip dried it hanging from a line. (It was so heavy I was afraid it would tear the whole line down).

Then I cut it up, cut off the pockets, shortened it and generally diminished the volume radically. The seams are not perfect, nor did I want them to be. I wanted the skirt to be a little "rough" with a tiny breath of rock and roll perhaps, but still age appropriate and not too short. I left the hem unfinished to enhance that effect. I wore it last night to a big village do - Þorrablót - and I must say I looked rather good.

But you just have to take my word for it. I completely forgot to have my picture taken. I my household, I take the pictures. That is the reason I very seldom appear in the family albums.

My long cardigan

I love my long cardigan. It's perfect in every way.

The soft colours really compliment my pale complexion and the leaf rank is a part of a very old mitten pattern from the west fjords of Iceland.

The arms are extra long (just the way I like them).

The buttons are vintage and no two are the same.

There is just one problem. It doesn't fit.

The fit over the hips and waist is perfect, no less, and it's quite good over the bust itself too. Then I get into trouble.

I should have started the decreases right away, but I didn't do them until after the leaf rank. That, and the fact that I made the bust darts a bit too big, are the reasons for my trouble: the cardigan is way to wide over the shoulders.

The yoke simply doesn't fit me no matter how I twist and turn in front of the mirror.

I'm going to have to make me another and let this one go. But when I do, I'm going to change the buttons. These lovely vintage ones are mine.

Almost

Today's rock picture, originally uploaded by Harpa J.

The cardigan is almost finished - and it almost fits.

All the ends are hidden, the collar is folded and sewn down and the holes under the arms are neatly closed. The steek is open and the only thing lest to to is the crochet edge and the sewing of the buttons. I expect to do that tonight.

The only problem is that the cardigan doesn't quite fit. It almost fit - in fact it fits perfectly over the hips and waist but it's a little bit big over the chest and shoulders. Not a lot, but a bit. Perhaps I can fix it when I block it. I sincerely hope so, because I do love this one. A lot.

Baby Surprise

My internet knitting club is having a KAL , starting this Monday, Elizabeth Zimmerman's famous Baby Surprise jacket. I have long been planning to knit that, and yesterday I met the beautiful young man I'm going to knit it for (4 months old). I'm thinking about doing it in single plötulopi, but I have not decided yet.

My cardigan is on hold - I'm away for the weekend, so noting will be done for a few days now

I just cast of the last stitches on the cardigan. Now it's hiding of the ends and then the steeking. I'm very afraid that it's a bit too big though - but I sincerely hope that it fits. So much, that I'm almost afraid to try it on...

My long cardigan

This is half the yoke pattern and a part of the sleeve. It's knit in single plötulopi on 2.5mm pins (US 1 1/2) so it's not nearly as fas a knit as the "normal" lopapeysa but I think it's going to turn out really nice. At least I hope so.

The pattern is a very old leaf rank from my beloved Vestfirðir (The Westfjords of Iceland). It's a part of a traditional mitten pattern.

Hat?

My husband found this ice "hat" on a family outing the other day. It's the same shape as many of my felted hats as he spotted right away.

Utan Hringbrautar - Reykjavík Urban Landscape

My friend, the master photographer Einar Jónsson has just released a photobook through blurb.com. Utan Hringbrautar - Reykjavík Urban Landscape is a series of photographs from Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland, and its vicinity. Most of the photos were taken in 2006-2009. Selected photos from this series were displayed at the Iceland exhibition in Pyramid Studios in Miami, Florida in March/April 2009.

Some of them can be seen in this album. The book only includes colour photos from this series. The black and white ones will be published later.

My cardigan is finally going very well. I had hoped to finish it today, but that is not going to happen. But I'm up to the yoke pattern and the decreases are not far away, so I'll be steeking in two days or so.

Heart

Christmas is finally over - the last day was yesterday, here in Iceland at least.

This is one of I don´t know how many hearts I did this Christmas. This one went to a very kind woman I have never met - but she sent me a lot of embroidery floss, just because she saw my work and liked it.

Wire bracelets

The other day my daughter needed some small things to give to her friends. I had some wire and beads so I made these bracelets. They are my first attempt in crochet with wire and I can say it's not as hard as I thought.

My little

cheerleading team was in the paper today (Icelandic). It's creating quite a lot of attention, since it's the only cheerleading team in Iceland - as far as we know at least.

Waistlines

The Waistlines pattern is up on ravelry. Finally.

The poncho

Here is a picture of the last of my Christmas knitting. It's extremely soft and light, the yarn Anny Blatt Alpagor is unbelievably cuddly and warm and wonderful in every way, but it does shed a little bit. Other than that, it's and absolute dream both to work with and wear.

Baking

I didn't bake anything this Christmas. Unless pancakes count? I made a batch of delicious pancakes yesterday for my family and they disappeared like - well like hot pancakes tend to do. I never use any milk (only water) in my pankakes and only little sugar but that does not matter, they are very good despite of that.

These beauties are from my mothers table on Christmas day. My sister decorated them, she made cakes for each family member, several with the passing year and the next, Christmas trees etc.

The little one made sure no one got bored:

Christmas Beauty

Christmas Beauty, originally uploaded by Harpa J.

This is the first picture I took on my new camera, just moments after I recovered from the surprise of getting it from my family.
